bfa senior annora madden opens capstone exhibition, ‘when looking back’ at usu

Apr 10, 2025

Annora Madden, “When Looking Back”

An exhibition of large scale photographic works by Utah State University Bachelor of Fine Art senior Annora Madden is featured in USU’s annual BFA capstone exhibition, Halcyon, at USU’s Tippetts and Eccles Galleries, April 7-16. Madden’s work is featured alongside senior BFA students from printmaking, painting, sculpture, and ceramics.

Madden’s When Looking Back explores the nuances of home, memory, and growth. With a reverent and nostalgic eye, the large scale photographs re-live and recreate memories of childhood in a well loved home. Each image is bathed in soft light, inviting a sense of quiet melancholy.

Madden, the daughter of USU faculty, has lived in Logan the majority of her life. “I will soon leave this place, saying goodbye not only to my home but to the innocent, childlike part of myself,” Madden says, “When Looking Back turns the past into images of tender regard, and as I grow and move on I will always have these pictures of my home as it was and as I will remember it.”

During her BFA studies at USU, Annora was awarded an Undergraduate Research and Creative Opportunity grant, served as President of the USU Photography Guild, exhibited at the 2024 Society for Photographic Education regional conference, and presented her creative work at USU’s annual Student Research Symposium and Research on Capitol Hill events.

“At USU Photo, we are guided in our belief in photography’s critical role in contemporary culture,” says Jared Ragland, Assistant Professor and Photography Area Coordinator. “Through the making, learning, and sharing of images, we encourage students to utilize photography as a tool for compassionate citizenship, meaningful storytelling, and impactful social change. Annora has embodied that mission, and throughout her BFA studies she has dedicated herself to building a mature, sustained body of work that speaks to the universal experiences of locating and understanding one’s identity between longing for the halcyon days of childhood and leaving home. Annora’s pictures welcome us to join her in thoughtful reflection and quiet beauty.”

Concurrent to the exhibition an additional selection of images from When Looking Back will be displayed in USU’s Chase Fine Art Center ground level hallway and on the USU Photo Instagram account, @usuphoto. Visit Madden’s Instagram at @annoralane
